New York, NY –A benefit concert was held on January 10th to
support the Mount Sinai Kyabirwa Surgical Facility (KSF) in
Uganda, a project led by Michael L. Marin, MD, Surgeon-In-Chief
at the Mount Sinai Heath System. Cocktails and dinner were
followed by a much-anticipated performance by the famed Steve
Miller Band. Steve Miller invited a popular Ugandan musician,
Ssewa Ssewa, to join him on stage, to the crowd’s delight.
Famed artist Richard
Prince, a Department of Surgery Advisory Board member and
supporter of the KSF, created an original poster for the
benefit. Everyone in attendance received a signed copy to
commemorate the evening.
The benefit, which
attracted more than 200 guests from the United States and
Uganda, was organized to foster continued support for the KSF,
which is currently being constructed in the small Ugandan
village of Kyabirwa. The KSF was launched in 2016 by Dr. Marin
to address the severe shortage of safe and affordable surgical
care which affects roughly five billion people worldwide. The
clinic will serveas a model of a self-sustaining surgical
facility that may be replicated in other underserved areas in
the future. Construction of the KSF is underway and is projected
to openin spring 2019.
Financials were not
reported as fundraising efforts are ongoing.
