Considering the Key Takeaways from
the
Africa Open For Business Summit
during the
UN General Assembly's High-Level Week in New York |
|
I
am pleased to inform you that the 7th Annual Africa
Open for Business Summit, which was held on
September 27, 2024, in the Trusteeship Council
Chamber at United Nations Headquarters in New York,
during High-Level Week (79th Session of the General
Assembly) went very well.
We started the Summit with a solemn
pledge, individually and collectively, to do
everything possible to eradicate all forms of
discrimination and violence against women and girls,
symbolically standing up and raising the Red Card to
signify zero tolerance for gender-based violence and
discrimination through the unifying power of sports.
According to the World Health
Organization (WHO), roughly one woman out of three
in today’s world has experienced violence from an
intimate partner in their lifetime.
We have received meaningful feedback
from participants, citing the Summit’s significance
resulting from comprehensive coverage of topics and
notable leaders in attendance.
The youth and tourism panels were
remarkably effective, presenting essential
information on innovation and sustainable
development across Africa. Participants recognized
that involving young leaders in development
discussions and exploring tourism prospects can
substantially influence public opinion, supporting
Africa's economic development.
The awardee’s selection received
widespread acclaim, and their acceptance speeches,
coupled with the unveiling of ARDN's special musical
anthem, served as poignant reminders of the
impactful cultural endeavors elevating Africa's
global presence.
I am pleased to send you the link to
the United Nations' video recording of the entire
summit. You can view it on UN Web TV:

I’m also pleased to share with you
the links to two articles on the Summit, one by the
Wall Street Herald and the other by
the New York Amsterdam News.

I wish to inform you in advance that
ARDN will organize a side event in parallel with the
sixty-ninth session of the Commission on the Status
of Women (CSW) at the United Nations Headquarters in
New York, running from March 10 to 21, 2025, and we
will disseminate the confirmed date of the side
event in due course.
Thank you once again for being such
an important part of our journey
towards popularizing the Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs)
in Africa and the Diaspora.
We hope to keep inspiring each
other.

GIVE A RED CARD
TO DISCRIMINATION AND VIOLENCE AGAINST
WOMEN AND GIRLS
AN INITIATIVE LAUNCHED BY
THE AFRICAN RENAISSANCE AND DIASPORA NETWORK
The FIFA Women's World Cup 2019, hosted by France, has
highlighted women's outstanding achievements in sports and
generated enthusiasm on all continents.
Yet while the world applauded the skills of women on the pitch, around the
globe billions of women and girls were experiencing and
still experience numerous forms of discrimination and
violence too often disregarded.
They are deprived of basic rights proclaimed in the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights, denied opportunities, and suffer physica
l and emotional abuse.
It prevents them from living truly fulfilling lives and also hampers
social, economic and health progress for all human beings.
This is why several teams engaged in the Cup decided, with
the support of FIFA, to give a red card to all forms of
discrimination and violence against women and girls
everywhere in the world, and to invite men and women all
over the world to follow suit.
Together with
FIFA,
UNDP,
UNFPA,
UN Women,
the French Presidential Council for Africa
and the
ARDN
they call for signing the
"Equal Light"
appeal and pledge and living up to that commitment.
If you are ready, add your name.
EQUAL LIGHT
APPEAL AND PLEDGE
A red card in soccer spotlights and helps prevent unfair
or dangerous behaviour.
We, therefore, give the RED CARD to discrimination and
violence against women and girls in all forms and in all
countries.
We commend all governments for committing on 25 September
2015 at the United Nations to achieve - by 2030 at the
latest
- 17 "Sustainable Development Goals"
in order to end poverty and hunger; reduce inequality; build peaceful,
just and inclusive societies; protect the planet and its
natural resources; and generate decent work for all.
We appeal to women and men around the globe to help reach
Goal number 5 for achieving gender equality everywhere and
empowering all women and girls.
We urge individuals, associations, enterprises, local and
regional authorities, governments and intergovernmental
bodies
- to make this an absolute priority.
It is long overdue, and it is a prerequisite for reaching
other
Sustainable Development Goals.
We pledge to fully respect every other human being,
regardless of gender, culture, colour, language, social
origin, birth, property or religion, hence to put an end to
all forms of discrimination and violence against
women and girls.
This will enable everyone to stand together in an Equal
Light of progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals |
