March 20th every
year is a celebration of the International Day of Happiness, as
decried by a United Nations Resolution! A high-level panel was
held with UN Ambassadors and academicians in a conference room
at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.
|
The distinguished panelists spoke about how
the day got recognized officially at the UN, and about
programs around the world that are promoting happiness of
the people. This is especially important in these troubled
times when most people and governments are obsessed with
finances instead of people’s feelings. |
The event was organized by H.E. Ambassador
Hamid Al-Bayati, former Ambassador of Iraq to the UN and
currently a professor at Fordham University, who led the
campaign for governments make the International Day of
Happiness official in the UN calendar that impressively was
agreed by consensus. |
The speakers acknowledged the country
of Bhutan, whose King in 972 instituted a measure of Gross
National Happiness as an alternative paradigm
to gross
national Product. |
The UN Ambassador of Bhutan, Kunzang
C. Namgyel,
who was present, made inspiring remarks. Psychology
professor and UN NGO representative Dr. Judy Kuriansky
showed an outstanding original video highlighting the Bhutan
initiatives at the UN, her activities, producing exciting UN
events about the Happiness Day at the UN, and impressive and
moving international projects that facilitate peoples’
happiness around the world, despite challenges, including in
Africa, the Caribbean and the US. |
International musician Russell Daisey did a
short reprise of the original song debuted at last year’s
event, “Happy People, Happy Planet.” The audience was
reverted by their presentations, and, understandably walked
out not only inspired and informed but also happy. |
