As you are aware, GPST is a business and
industry-led, action-oriented, multi-stakeholder
initiative created by the International Road
Transport Union (IRU) and the United Nations Global
Compact in 2014. The mission of GPST is to mobilize
transport industry actors representing all modes
(aviation, maritime, rail, road), as well as
companies from the logistics, insurance and
technology sectors – in addition to UN system
agencies, multilateral development banks, academia
and civil society organizations to engage in
effective international cooperation to support the
implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The joining of forces with UN OHRLLS and the World
Ocean Council demonstrate our continued commitment
to expand our partnership with sustainable transport
stakeholders from all domains. This event will allow
GPST and its Partners to generate awareness of the
challenges that face the international community in
sustaining the well-being of the Ocean. In this
context, GPST and its Members will contribute to
identifying innovations and processes that will
contribute to making maritime trade more efficient
sustainable by facilitating trade and in doing so,
relieving the pressure on this vital ocean resource
that sustains all forms of life and the productivity
of mankind.
GPST and its Partners invited guests, and the
International Maritime Organization, as the global
authority on maritime trade, to share their immense
expertise, vast body of knowledge and best practices
relating to sustainable maritime transport and
trade. We invite you to contribute this important
forum for dialogue in order to help to promote a
better understanding of how governments, businesses
and the international community can effectively
contribute to the achievement of the sustainable
development targets (SDGs) and ensure that all users
of our Ocean act more sustainably.
As you are aware, the recent meeting of the GPST and
the separate meeting of the GPST Policy Advisory
Council confirmed the strategic priorities pursue by
GPST, notably as reflected in the Ashgabat Process
for the Advancement of Sustainable Transport (APAST),
which provides a comprehensive framework for
broad-based stakeholder cooperation to support the
2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SDGs.
APAST, which embodies the policy recommendations
expressed by UN Member States at the first UN Global
Sustainable Transport Conference promises to
accelerate the effective implementation of the SDGs
by facilitating broader, more effective global
actions on sustainable transport.
