honored for extraordinary success stories that inspire girls
to achieve their goals
On Wednesday, November 20, Cheryl Saban, Ph.D., writer,
psychologist, United Nations Representative and Founder of
The Cheryl Saban Self Worth Foundation for Women and Girls,
chaired the 18th annual
Girls Inc. Los Angles Celebration Luncheon honoring four
powerful women at The Beverly Hills Hotel. Dr. Saban is a
national board member for Girls Inc., the nonprofit that
inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold.
Dr. Saban has been a lifelong advocate for the advancement
and empowerment of girls and women, and through her Self
Worth Foundation, is involved with a number of charitable
organizations dedicated to the betterment of women. More
recently, Dr. Saban was personally recommended by Secretary
of State Hillary Clinton and appointed by President Obama to
serve as a Representative of the United States to the
Sixty-Seventh Session of the General Assembly of the United
Nations where she focused on The U.N. Trust Fund to End
Violence Against Women.
At the event, Dr. Saban spoke about her commitment to
empowering girls and women, and the need for innovative
solutions to the issues they face. The event also featured
four Girls Inc. National Scholars, young women who shared
their stories of achieving in the face of incredible
obstacles, including bullying, stereotypes, a lack of role
models, and economic challenges.
"Cheryl
is a dynamic, tireless advocate for girls and women who
demonstrates unmatched commitment to social justice," said
Judy Vredenburgh, Girls Inc. President and CEO. "Her
dedication to our event and to recognizing women of the
highest caliber in their fields has been extraordinary."
Dr. Saban commented, "I am extremely proud to be part of
such an important organization for young women and welcome
the opportunity to share my experiences as a mother, a
daughter, and importantly, a woman. Girls Inc. plays an
important mentoring role to many girls by teaching them the
skills to solve problems, learn from their mistakes, and
celebrate successes. The organization helps girls to
develop strong aspirations and prepares them to work hard to
reach their goals. Importantly, it enables women and girls
to create opportunities for themselves to be the change that
they want to see in the world."
Dr. Saban concluded, "I would also like to congratulate the
National Scholars for their tremendous accomplishments, and
thank Giselle, Bonnie, Mindy and Anne for their commitment
to the organization. You each represent an incredible
source of empowerment for women and girls throughout the
world."
The event honorees were: Giselle Fernández, Managing
Director of
Aspiration Growth Capital; Bonnie Hammer, Chairman of
NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment; Mindy Kaling, Creator,
Executive Producer, and Writer of The
Mindy Project; and Anne Sweeney, Co-Chair, Disney Media
Networks and President,
