The Missions of Palau and Canada to the
United Nations in partnership with the International
Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP) convened a historic
event at the United Nations NYC headquarters on September 7th on
Mental Health and Wellbeing at the Heart of
the Sustainable Development Goals:
Concrete Means of Implementation.
The
conference featured presentations from UN ambassadors and
representatives from the World Health Organization, the UN
Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the
Clinton Global Initiative and non-governmental organizations
around the world.
Ambassador Dr. Caleb Otto (Palau) and Dr. Judy Kuriansky (IAAP)
had partnered in a successful campaign with governments to
insure the inclusion of mental health and wellbeing in the
new UN Global Agenda 2030 for sustainable development (the
SDGs). The Trudeau Canadian government has pledged major
financial support. The Ambassador of Belgium
noted the commitment to mental health of his Queen, a
psychologist and speech therapist. Other Ambassadors who
spoke in support:
H.E. Jean-Francis Zinsou (Benin), H.E. Jane Chigiyal (Micronesia), H.E.
Laura Flores (Panama), H.E. Maria Helena Lopes de Jesus
Pires (Timor-Leste),
and H.E. Lewis G. Brown (Liberia).
The exciting kick off was a performance of
the original anthem
"Happy
People, Happy Planet"
by
internationally acclaimed composer and singer/songwriter
Russell Daisey
with a troupe of musicians and singers.
NGO representatives presented real programs making a
difference “on the ground” worldwide from Haiti to Hong Kong
proving mental health at the heart of the agenda.
The event is the first of many to come relating mental
health to the agenda goals -- ending poverty, empowering
women and girls, climate action, achieving peace -- leading
to a General Assembly resolution and reaching all people for
mental wellness.
