On January 27, Literacy Partners,
New York's
only nationally accredited adult literacy program,
hosted the second of three
'Food for Thought'
luncheon events, featuring columnist Liz Smith and
author Jeanette Walls. Thanks to the generous
support of New
York
benefactors and the '21 Club,' the event was a
resounding success.
Honorary Chair of Literacy Partners and a celebrated
journalist, Liz
Smith drew laughs from the crowd when she
kicked off the event by introducing herself as the
'2000 year-old gossip columnist.'
Smith engaged the audience by describing her
adventures as a reporter in Manhattan, alongside
former gossip columnist and now best-selling author,
Jeannette Walls.
Smith spoke of Walls' poise and character as a
professional and as a person, quoting sensational
reviews for both of Wall's books.
During her talk, Walls discussed
her difficult childhood as retold in her
international
New York Times bestseller
The Glass Castle
along with the history behind her most recent novel,
Half Broke
Horses. Walls captivated and inspired
the audience, explaining how her personal struggles
were really a blessing that gave her 'texture' and
substance as an individual. She also emphasized the
importance of telling her story ? and how she hopes
to inspire others to share their own.
" Secrets
are like Vampires. They feed on the darkness and
they drain the life out of us," Walls explained. "I
found that when I shared my secrets, brought
them into the light, they disappeared." Walls
likened the shame of her childhood to the feeling
that so many Literacy Partners students must have
before admitting their secret: that they could
neither read nor write.
The event was attended by Literacy Partners Board
Members
Jacqueline Weld Drake and
Jean Chatzky.
Bill Stubbs,
Marjorie Reed Gordon, Kate Bittman, Mercedes Bograd,
Martha Bograd, Mary McBride, Violaine Berbach,
Anabelle Mariaca, Peggy Culver Obernauer, Joan
Steinberg and Barbara Terry were also in
attendance.
