On the evening of July 7,
museum, cultural and
civic leaders “mingled with the mammals” as part
of the VIP Celebration for the reopening of a
Beaux-Arts gem, the 1913 Building—which has
been closed for over four years for intensive
restoration, renovation and installation of new
exhibitions. The VIP Celebration unveiled Age
of Mammals, an exhibition 65 million years
in the making, as well as two new exhibits—What
on Earth? and Life Through the Ages:
Revisiting the Paintings of Charles R. Knight—inside
the dazzling Haaga Family Rotunda. Guests were
greeted by an Ice Luge bar and mastodon ice
sculpture inside the dramatic Fin Whale
Passage gallery before entering an adjacent
gallery stylized with Charles Knight-themed
backdrops, retro banquettes and succulents
sculpted in mammal forms.
The evening
also provided exhibition walkthroughs, cocktails
and hor d’oeuvres, and musical entertainment.
