GIFT OF HEARING IN UGANDA

(August
1, 2012)
– Starkey Hearing Foundation wrapped
up its month-long hearing mission in
Africa with a stop in Kampala,
Uganda on July 20. With the help of
President Bill Clinton, daughter
Chelsea Clinton, NFL star Larry
Fitzgerald, and CNN Hero Sister
Rosemary Nyirumbe, the Foundation
fit more than 200 patients. This
marks Starkey Hearing Foundation’s
third mission to Uganda since March
2011, distributing more than 12,000
hearing aids during that time.
The mission began in Nairobi on June
27. From there the team traveled
throughout Kenya, also stopping in
Nakuru and Kisumu, along with
Blantyre, Malawi before wrapping up
in Kampala, Uganda. During that
time, Starkey Hearing Foundation’s
team of audiologists and volunteers
fit more than 12,000 hearing aids to
children and adults in need in the
three countries.
This marks the second time this year
President Clinton has participated
in a hearing mission. He joined the
Starkey Hearing Foundation team in
Bogota, Colombia in February.
Starkey Hearing Foundation joined
the Clinton Global Initiative in
2010, pledging to fit 1 million
hearing aids to people in need this
decade. In 2011, the first year of
the pledge, the Foundation fit and
delivered more than 110,000 hearing
aids worldwide.
"As a Clinton Global Initiative
member, it was an honor to have
President Bill Clinton and Chelsea
Clinton join us to show their
support and see our CGI commitment
in action with their own eyes," said
Starkey Hearing Foundation Founder
Bill Austin.
"Our mission in Kampala, Uganda, was
yet another testament to the
connecting power of hearing. It was
also wonderful to have our friends
Larry Fitzgerald, Jr. and Sister
Rosemary Nyirumbe on hand to help us
change lives."
Starkey Hearing Foundation’s Uganda
hearing mission is one of dozens of
missions conducted each year by the
Foundation, both domestically and
internationally. Hearing missions
are the primary way Starkey Hearing
Foundation realizes its goal –
So the World May Hear.
The conclusion of the Africa hearing
mission precedes the Starkey Hearing
Foundation’s So The World May
Hear Awards Gala, which will be
held on Saturday, August 4, in St.
Paul, Minn. The 12th
annual event raises funds to help
make future hearing missions
possible. This year’s gala will
honor Sister Rosemary for her work
in Uganda where she has helped more
than 2,000 women who have been
affected by the Lord’s Resistance
Army. She has openly defied Joseph
Kony and continues to help women
lead independent lives and become
agents for change in their
community.
About Starkey Hearing
Foundation
Starkey Hearing Foundation is
bringing understanding among people
through hearing care by focusing on
awareness, education, protection and
treatment, so the world may hear.
Hearing loss affects one in 10
Americans, and 63 million children
worldwide, yet many do not have
access to the hearing devices that
can help them. Starkey Hearing
Foundation fits and gives more than
100,000 hearing aids annually, and
as a member of President Clinton’s
Global Initiative, it has pledged to
fit 1 million hearing aids this
decade. In addition to giving the
gift of hearing through worldwide
hearing missions, Starkey Hearing
Foundation promotes hearing health
awareness and education through the
Listen Carefully initiative and
provides hearing instruments to
low-income Americans through the
Hear Now program. For more
