WHAT: On Monday, December 3, CHRISTIE’S New York

entertainment and auction for an elite group of philanthropists,
top clientele, and members of the sailing community, to raise
funds for Sailors for the Sea and its programs to educate and
engage the boating community in the worldwide protection of the
oceans.
The five, one-of-a-kind fantasy lots up for bid combined with
generous paddle raises from the audience helped to raise an
incredible $779,350 (and counting) for the organization, far
surpassing the original goal of $550,000.
Additional highlights of the evening included the opening
remarks by Sailors for the Sea Founder and Board Chairman, David
Rockefeller, Jr., and a panel discussion led by renowned
broadcaster Charlie Rose with two of the world’s most prominent
ocean advocates, Dr. Jane Lubchenco, Administrator of the
National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, and Sir
Russell Coutts, the most successful skipper in the history of
the America’s Cup.
One-of-a-kind fantasy lots included:

liner, the Queen Mary 2, with five-star accommodations at Duke’s
St. James London Hotel, a gourmet meal at Wilton’s restaurant,

jewelry from Tiffany & Co. and a special dinner with David
Rockefeller, Jr. and acclaimed actress Glenn Close, who has a
special family connection to Marjorie Merriweather Post, the

ABOUT SAILORS FOR THE SEA:
Founded in 2004, with offices in Newport, R.I., and Yokohama,
Japan, Sailors for the Sea is a nonprofit organization that
educates and empowers the boating community to protect and
restore our oceans and local waters. The organization has
reached over 200,000 people through a variety of educational
programs and highly visible sailing events. Among its many
programs, Sailors for the Sea develops free environmental lesson
plans, called Rainy Day Kits, used by sailing instructors and
teachers to explain ocean science and teach the principles of
environmental sustainability to more than 20,000 young sailors
and students. Sailors for the Sea reached more than 120,000
sailors worldwide, who have participated in Clean Regattas
certified events, and is the Official Clean Regattas Partner for
the 34th America’s Cup. Clean Regattas certification provides
independent third-party verification that a yacht club, sailing
program, or regatta is environmentally responsible, and is doing
its utmost to protect the waters upon which people sail. The
organization is also developing a sustainable practices program
for the entire marine industry. In the future, Sailors for the
Sea aims to unite the 12 million members of the boating
community as Ocean Stewards to preserve the world’s seas for
future generations.
