Brian Williams-Led Gala Celebrates 12 Years
of Success
During Lung Cancer Awareness Month
(New York, NY – November 18, 2014)
– Joan’s Legacy: Uniting Against Lung Cancer
(UALC) marked its 12th year of funding innovative
lung cancer research by raising more than $1.4 million at
its signature gala event, the “Strolling Supper with Blues
and News.” On Wednesday, November 12th, 750
guests gathered at Gotham Hall in Manhattan to support the
efforts of the partners and doctors who have tirelessly
raised awareness and pursued a cure for the nation’s
deadliest cancer.
The Strolling Supper is the largest event marking Lung
Cancer Awareness month in New York, highlighting the need
for research, funding, and awareness to combat the nation’s
number one cancer killer. Lung cancer is severely
underfunded, lagging behind all other cancers. Over the past
twelve years, the Strolling Supper has helped Uniting
Against Lung Cancer fund $12 million in research grants at
47 different institutions across the United States.
“The Joan’s Legacy: Uniting Against Lung Cancer Strolling
Supper only continues to grow each year. We were thrilled to
see so many new and familiar faces, and know that each and
every attendee is doing their part to assist the fight
against this terrible disease,” said Mary Ann Tighe, CEO of
CBRE’s Tri-State Region and the president of the UALC board.
“We are pleased to celebrate our 12th annual
event and we continue to hope that someday soon we will
share the joy of finding a cure with our dedicated
partners.”
Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed a silent auction
packed with luxury items and once-in-a-lifetime experiences,
a rousing performance by Grammy award winning blues artist
Delbert McClinton, and savory food and cocktails.
NBC’s Brian Williams, a long-time supporter of the Joan’s
Legacy: Strolling Supper returned as the event’s host and
honorary chairman, and remembered his late friend and
colleague, Joan Scarangello, a talented news writer in whose
memory the foundation was established. Joan, a never smoker,
lost her battle with lung cancer at the age of 47 in 2001.
Williams urged the crowd to donate to Research by the Hour,
a program which allows attendees to sponsor an hour of lung
cancer research. Additionally, WABC-TV News Anchor Bill
Ritter returned this year as the gala’s emcee. He honored
his mother, whom he lost to lung cancer, and emphasized that
the work made possible by UALC has helped to extend the
lives of those living with lung cancer.
“We would like to express sincere thanks to all of those who
made this year’s Strolling Supper a true success,” said
Roxanne Donovan, event co-chair and UALC board member. We
are grateful to our partners and medical advisors for their
continued support, tireless efforts and dedication to
Uniting Against Lung Cancer. We look forward to achieving
even greater milestones in the years to come.”
Uniting Against Lung Cancer, a 501(c)(3) organization
