Yank
Barry, the philanthropist and humanitarian who co-founded
the Global Village Champions Foundation, and who just
returned from Bulgaria where he freed
more than 50 Syrian refugees living
in squalor conditions in Bulgarian camps as they
sought asylum, will be honored on the floor of the U.S.
House of Representatives for his humanitarian efforts.
Rep.
Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) will pay tribute to Barry and
“the good work of the Global Village Champions Foundation”
on December 3, 2013.
In a
letter to Barry that announces the upcoming recognition,
Congresswoman Jackson Lee writes: “Your impact on the lives
of people throughout the world through your humanitarian
efforts and your music is worthy of this congressional
recognition.”
Barry is
former lead singer of the rock n’ roll band The Kingsmen,
which recorded the classic ‘Louie, Louie.’ Barry has been
twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his fight
against world hunger.
Rep. Jackson Lee said that she has placed his name in
nomination to the President of the United States for the
Presidential Medal of Freedom. This year’s recipients of
those awards received them yesterday at The White House.
“I take
great pride in recognizing your achievements and servitude
while serving the world community with unwavering dedication
and diligence and is indeed worthy of respect, admiration
and commendation of the United States Congress,”
Congresswoman Jackson Lee wrote.

Last
week, 52 Syrian refugees, many of them children, began new
lives in Bulgaria thanks to Barry. The families, who fled
Syria, are getting a chance at a fresh start. Up until
Barry, a multimillionaire Jewish businessman, intervened and
arranged for their freedom, they were living in inhumane
conditions in one of four refugee camps in Bulgaria. As the
only country in the region accepting refugees, Bulgaria’s
refugee camps are greatly over capacity, often doubling in
size in a week’s time, and the country lacks the funding to
do more.
