New York, NY (September 18, 2013):
As the autumn season approaches, women throughout the
financial and banking industries gathered to assist the
clients of Dress for Success Worldwide turn over a
new leaf of financial literacy at the seventh annual
Women in Business: Making Change power breakfast, which
took place today at the New York Stock Exchange. With guest
host Carmen Wong Ulrich and keynote speaker Karen
Finerman, Women in Business: Making Change aims
to raise funds and awareness for Dress for Success’
Financial Literacy Program.
Ulrich,
Co-Founder and President of ALTA Wealth Management and the
former host and co-creator of CNBC’s daily personal finance
show, On the Money, returned as guest host for
another year, kicking off the morning’s programming with a
rousing story about her longstanding relationship with Dress
for Success to packed room with women and men from such
organizations as the OSP Group, RBS, BNY Mellon, Capco, AXA
Equitable, Women’s Bond Club, Jewell, Rabobank, NYSE
Euronext, Lazard and L’eggs Hosiery.
Joi Gordon, CEO of Dress for Success Worldwide,
welcomed the attendees and announced a brand new initiative
for the organization. This winter, Dress for Success
Worldwide will release Threads, its first ever coffee
table book, highlighting the bonds that women around the
world share, regardless of language, location or lifestyle.
The attendees of Women in Business: Making Change
received the first public peek of what the book is to
become.
Amy Tashjian, Director of East Coast Operations for Dress
for Success Worldwide,
heralded the accomplishments of the organization’s Financial
Literary Program, especially those of the 2013 graduates:
“In 2013 alone, our Financial Literacy graduates have
learned to project a monthly budget, set monthly spending
goals and stick to a monthly budget; they now understand the
importance of opening a checking account, have taken
definitive steps to open a checking account on their own—and
are now paying their bills, making purchases and accessing
their financial information online. 100 percent of our
graduates maintain a savings account, have instituted a plan
to reduce their personal debt and have started an emergency
savings fund. As a result, the class of 2013 was able to
save $8,448 dollars collectively for their emergency funds
and paid off $3,640 in debt.”
Faith Frank, President of the AXA Foundation,
announced the 10 recipients of this year’s “Beyond the Suit”
scholarship. AXA Equitable helped Dress for Success to
launch the “Pursuit Beyond the Suit” scholarship program for
Dress for Success’ “Professional Women’s Group” (PWG) four
years ago. All PWG members around the world are eligible to
apply for a scholarship of up to $2,000 each to continue
their education in either a formal degree program or a
vocational program. Rifka Stark and Marsha Orallo, clients
of the Dress for Success branches in New York City, joined
Frank on stage to accept their scholarships.
The Women’s Bond Club mission is to bring together
seasoned professional women from all sectors of the capital
markets industry in order to forge strong personal networks
and assist women in advancing within their chosen fields–
and they have done just that with their continued support of
Dress for Success. A partner of the organization since
2005, WBC received special recognition at Women in
Business: Making Change for the advancements that
they’ve helped Dress for Success make in its Career Centers
and Professional Women’s Group.
Maurece Jones,
the Dress for Success “Success Ambassador” for Women in
Business: Making Change, gave a heartfelt and emotional
speech as she detailed the accomplishments was able to
achieve through the Financial Literacy Program, opting to
craft her speech as a letter to her mother, who passed away
just a few short years ago.
Karen Finerman,
Co-Founder and President of Metropolitan Capital Advisors,
Inc., took the stage last and captivated the room’s
attention as she reflected on her own career and
experiences, taking a page from her recently released New
York Times’ Bestseller,
Finerman's Rules:

About

and
Life.
The
number one lesson that women in business should learn is to
"project confidence,” Finerman professed in her speech. And
“if you’re not making yourself valuable, you may be making
yourself expendable.”
