The children and teenagers at Boys & Girls Harbor spent an exciting day spending time with a few Houston based artists and professionals. Creativity expressed through art, music and writing is not only fun, but also a wonderful way to enhance positive self-esteem in our youth, especially during difficult times. The mission of the Boys & Girls Harbor is to provide healthy, comprehensive care for children and families in crisis, and through the work of the Connie Kwan-Wong Foundation and her team of excited volunteers, these kids were showered with creative opportunities during their big surprise visit. 

The kids spent the afternoon listening to music and getting lessons on the guitar from Daren Hightowerr, the founder of the Children’s Music Foundation, and SPIN DOCTORS bass guitarist, Mark White. Later Hightower and his son, Christian Hightower, announced to his bright-eyed students that they would be donating guitars to the Boys & Girls Harbor. Eager readers listened to Melissa Williamss, children’s author and founder of the Read3Zero Literacy Foundation read from her Iggy the Iguana series and talk about the foundation’s writing/publishing contests for kids. Later the kids dressed up like her book characters for a few picture worthy moments. Hanh Tran, artist, guided the kids into a beautiful canvas project, which included a heart made of the students and teachers’ handprints. Each colorful hand represented the day’s message of teamwork and diversity. Many other professionals spent the day being excellent mentors to the children, including pediatrician and photographer, Maria Yates and pediatrician, Unnati Doshii, who were there to answer health related questions. 



Every child deserves those moments of nurturing their creative side, and through the vision and work at the CKW Foundation, these kids got exactly what they were yearning … love and attention, mixed in with a lot of fun!
