Connect Antigua and Barbuda Initiative
A fantastic example for us all to emulate!
By Gerard Mc
Keon
Well the really great ideas are simple, simple and obvious!
So simple sometimes, that you think they are natural
and have always been there. Never created, in some strange
magical way, they just belong!
I have just returned from an exploratory trip to
Antigua. We were
there with our media partner South-South News to
experience Antigua's massive leap into the front ranks of
the
modern IT world of G4 connectivity and nano second lag
times
Antigua, is positioning itself to be a world leader in IT
Technology,
which is a great thing for the Island and the people
who live there.
I must admit, it was something much simpler, something small
on the scale of multi-million dollar deals that caught my
attention.
Parked in the Prime Minister's gated parking lot, a fleet of
5
converted buses that daily bring the Digital world to the
poorest remote
schools on the island.
Simple really!
Remote classes, well over 150 plus classes weekly delivering
computer skills
to children in the country side.
Children who often start their day driving livestock to the
fields, at 5 am.
A familiar story: the every day grind of life for
young children on small subsistence
farms in a great many fields around the world.
Now they can link to the modern internet, they
can engage with the great enormity of the world, no
longer shackled to the demands of the field but
citizens of the world, this is the wonder and
power
of the connected internet.
This surely, is simple brilliance, a modern day Rosetta
Stone.
Bringing the modern world to remote rural village
children.
We
at Black Tie International would like to see a 1000 buses,
emulating this wonderful initiative and bringing
connectivity, information and skills to the other neglected
and underserved regions of the world.
This initiative works, let's copy and implement it, again
and again
Congratulations and thanks to Prime Minister, Hon. Baldwin
Spencer
and
Dr. Edmond A. Mansoor, Minister of State, Information,
Broadcasting & Telecommunications, Office of the Prime
Minister.
