On the Road With Gerard Mc Keon

Had the opportunity to take a quick busmans holiday
and with the able
assistance of Kareem Gore from the Ministry of
Information, Broadcasting, Telecommunications,
Science & Technology enjoyed an afternoon between
meetings exploring the beauty of the Island.
Anupam Govil, a fellow guest on the trip only got 5
minutes at the beach, before he had to leave to
catch a plane, and as you can see by his smiley
face, he was in no rush to leave.
Strangely,
given the lush tropical plants and the warm trade
breezes, I kept thinking the" Ring of Kerry".
It took awhile but eventually the penny dropped and
eureka like I understood
what my mind was trying to tell me.
It is
remarkably unique to experience such a wide range of
climates, foliage and magnificent scenery in such a
short drive.
The
beaches are majestic, straight from central casting
tropical splendor.
The jagged remains of ancient volcano's seem placed
for maximum scenic effect, and the odd goat ambling
along the roadside, creates a sense of local color.
Shirley Heights is one of the most beautiful places
in the world. As fine a place to reveal in the
beauty of creation as I have ever experienced. Some
think god is a great architect, I think he's a
marvelous landscaper. I could have just sat and
contemplated existence and lost myself in the beauty
of it all, all day.
We drove back through the Rain Forest, only a stone
throw from
a much drier beach area. again strange how the
topography can change so rapidly. I pondered whether
or not to venture on the canopy ride, and traverse
from tree to tree at a hundred plus feet. I'm not
great with heights but I'm game for adventure. Any
way it was late and it was closed, so another
moment of doubt and choice, removed.
I did get to go to town later and visit some of the
Mas Clubs,
preparing for
The Antigua Carnival.
But
that's a tale for another day.
Or in
the modern vernacular
