Today my family and I visited The Frances Lehman Loeb Art
Center on the campus of Vasser College. It is a teaching
Museum, major art repository, and Exhibition space. The
current Exhibition is
"Genji's World of Japanese Woodblock Prints."
The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center.
The tale of Genji, written in the eleventh
century by the Japanese court Lady Murasaki Shikibu has
greatly influenced Japanese culture from novels and Kabuki
performances to today's manga and anime.
The Exhibition consisted of a rich array of
fifty seven Woodblock prints by many of Japan's leading
eighteenth-and nineteenth-century artists.
My children, Hudson & Hyacinth, loved the
vibrant colors and animated faces the characters displayed.
I was amazed at the amount of detail
each print had, truly astonishing.
We had such a wonderful time!
The Woodblock prints depict the fictional
poet, politician, and lover Prince Genji and his world in
the Imperial Court. They also present the life and times of
the fictional nineteenth-century hero Mitsuuji.
After this feast for the eyes we took a
stroll through the Sculpture Garden. The first sculpture
that greeted us upon arrival was by the artist Peter Lipsitt.
He was American and born in 1940. The title of the piece was
called "Odyssey." This was a bronze and created in 1994.
Admiring and discussing Peter Lipsitt's
"Odyssey." Bronze,1994.
We continued to follow the pebbled path and
saw a large nude by
Gaston Lachaise. It was titled "Nude with Drapery."

My son insisted on taking our photo, it was a lovely
rendering and being a huge fan as well as collector of
Lalique I knew Lachaise began his artistic career as a
designer of Art Nouveau decorative objects for the French
jeweler Rene Lalique. His most famous work, "Standing Woman"
is a voluptuous female nude with tapered limbs. This piece
is in Manhattan at The Museum of Modern Art.
Entering the Permanent Collection
We thoroughly enjoyed the Sculpture Garden
and after viewing
all the sculptures we decided to view the permanent
collection. I was immediately struck by a beautiful portrait
of Frances Lehman Loeb.
Mrs. Loeb attended Vasser from 1924 to 1926 and was a
trustee
of the school.
